Rezumat / Abstract
In the field of heritage language and culture studies, this article sets out to answer the following question: how does the Ukrainian Society of Brazil preserve, promote and publicise Ukrainian identity among its members and in the city of Curitiba (Brazil)? Through an exploratory and ethnographic documentary research, the researcher presents three pillars of the institution for analysis: the Barvínok Ukrainian Folklore, the Subotna Chkola Léssia Ukrainka and the „Ukrainian Memory Project through the historical collection of the Ukrainian Society of Brazil”. The focus of the analyses is on the aspect of adherence to Ukrainian cultural and national values and defence of the country on Brazilian territory, observed within the Ukrainian community of Curitiba. In the context of the activities of the Barvínok Ukrainian Folklore, there are actions aimed at the preservation and transmission of traditional dances and music; the knowledge of these cultural expressions on the part of the members; and the promotion of events that celebrate and valorise Ukrainian commemorative dates. Subotna Chkola provides children and teenagers with contact with this language and culture from an early age. The Memory Project encourages the care and safeguarding of documents which, in turn, build up the history being written by the Ukrainian community in Brazil.
